Musical theatre

So one of my favorite genres of music is musical theatre. I don’t love the theatre aspect of it, but I love how the songs tell a story. I started going to musical theatre camps when I was twelve and I haven’t stopped since. The first camp I went to was called DPAC (Durango performing arts camp); but after 10 years, the camp stopped because 2 of the 3 camp directors moved away from Durango. For the past 2 years, I went to a connected camp called MT(musical theatre) Rush.

I went to DPAC when I was 12,14,15,and 16. I missed the year when I was 13 due to an incredibly inconvenient brain tumor. I was honestly miserable. I loved my first year and not being able to return because of my chemo treatments was understandably upsetting. I made lots of new friends and re-met a lot of family. By the way, my grandmas sister was one of the directors and my grandma was one of the accompanists for a few years.

When my great aunt moved to Utah, the main camp became MT Rush. It had already existed, but it was smaller than DPAC. In 2017, I went to MT Rush for the first time and I enjoyed it as much as, if not more than, DPAC. DPAC was more focused on workshops to become better actors/singers while MT Rush was more about putting together a lot of musical numbers in a short amount of time.

At both of these camps, I made great friends. It was also a weird kind of family reunion. The location of DPAC was very close to a little town called Red Mesa that was settled by my family a long time ago. So nearly everyone there is related to me.

On the right is my second cousin Cole. We’re basically the same age and he’s been at camp every year I’ve gone.

Fortunately, not everyone in that area is related to me. I met a girl the last year of DPAC. We took an elective together called “5 minute musical”-which is one of the most genius things I’ve ever been a part of. We did “Grease” in 5 minutes. Well we kinda did. We skipped a lot, but it was a blast. We saw each other again the next year at MT Rush. We were already really good friends even though we got to know each other through text. It turns out we were both crushing on each other; so by the end of the week, we were dating. And we’ve been dating ever since. I don’t get to see her very much, though, since we live 8 hours away from eachother.

  1. I also love musical theatre. I love how songs tell a story- they are the most story-telling oriented type of music there is. I love the combo of acting, singing, and dancing. The song and dance add something incredible to the plot. Due to my passion, it became a main topic on my blog.
